The Grace of Space

Remember the entrance door to the sanctuary is inside you.
~Rumi

This piece speaks to the deep truth that our body is indeed our temple. We are a vessel for spirit to fill. We contain a divine light, a space of sanctuary and stillness, that is available to us at any moment if we choose to go inwards. I believe that this is what the Bible means when it says, “The Kingdom of God is within you.” Over the many months of painting this piece, the mantra came to me and repeated again and again in my mind, “My body is my Temple and my Earth is my Home.”

Dear Wise Women,

As write these words, I can feel myself physically dropping into the sanctuary of our shared space.

….

There was a very long pause between the writing of the last sentence and this one. Though my ideas for this treasure trove have been percolating since the moment we closed our circles two weeks ago, it is only now, at this very point of creation, that the word sanctuary has come to me - and it seems to have stopped me in my tracks.

I didn’t intend for this to be about “sanctuary”.

But here it is.

Allow me to backtrack for a moment. The title “The Grace of Space” came to me a few days ago when I was having a hard time holding space for myself, for situations and for others. My personal situation was amplified by what I was witnessing in the collective through social media and the news. Fortunately, I was able to catch myself, and eventually, bring in enough loving awareness to bridge the gap and access what I felt as “the grace of space” - which I realized was, yet, another way to describe the magic field of potentiality that is created when we “hold space” for one another.

And that is what this treasure trove was going to be about, and in many ways it still is. However, as I sit here trying to write, the only word that is coming through me is “sanctuary”.

….

Another long pause.

Honestly, I am not even sure how to proceed. I feel particularly awe struck by what I am experiencing right now. And I am struggling to convey it to you, but I will keep trying. If you are reading these words, then please read them slowly, as if you are listening to them.

Sanctuary.

This is not a word to take lightly. It is not a word to just slip into a sentence and then move on. This word asks for so much more, in fact, it commands it.

Sanctuary.

Nine letters when strung together create a living entity.

A space to enter.

To take refuge.
To be safe.
To be accepted.

Sanctuary.

A word that conjures many images and activates cellular memories from deep within. Truly, I cannot think of another word that more accurately captures the beauty and the tragedy of humanity.

The Home of Grace.

….

Let us enter the sanctuary together, let us create sanctuary for all.

Love,

Patti
